Dry Needling: What It Is and Why We Don’t Use It at AMP

Dry needling has become increasingly popular in the rehab and fitness world. You’ve probably seen it on social media, heard about it from a friend, or even been told it’s the missing piece to your pain relief.

And to be fair, dry needling can reduce pain and inflammation.

That sounds great… especially if you’re hurting.

But here’s the part that often gets overlooked:

Relief isn’t the same as resolution.

At AMP Performance Rehab, our goal isn’t just to make pain quieter for a few days. Our goal is to help you understand why your pain is happening, and build a solution that actually lasts.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a technique where thin needles are inserted into muscles or trigger points with the goal of:

  • Reducing muscle tension

  • Improving short-term mobility

  • Decreasing pain sensitivity

It’s considered a passive treatment, meaning it’s something done to you, not with you.

And yes, for some people, it can temporarily reduce symptoms.

The Catch: Treating Symptoms vs. Solving the Problem

Pain relief feels good. But pain relief alone doesn’t fix the reason pain started in the first place.

Most pain isn’t random. It’s usually the result of:

  • Poor load tolerance

  • Strength deficits

  • Movement compensations

  • Repeated stress without adequate capacity

  • Previous injuries that were never fully addressed

If we only focus on calming the pain, without addressing these factors, we’re just hitting the mute button.

And when the underlying issue is still there?

Pain usually comes back.

Why We Don’t Rely on Dry Needling

At AMP, we don’t lean on passive tools or quick fixes (even the high-tech or trendy ones.)

That doesn’t mean dry needling is “bad.”

It means it doesn’t reflect how we help people achieve long-term results.

We don’t believe real relief comes from:

  • Chasing symptoms

  • Repeated passive treatments

  • Temporary fixes without meaningful change

Instead, we believe in:

  • Active rehab

  • Intentional loading

  • Teaching your body how to move, tolerate stress, and adapt

Because that’s what actually creates lasting results.

Our Focus: An Active, Cause-Driven Approach

Rather than asking, “How do we calm this pain today?”

We ask, “Why is this pain here and what does your body need to handle your life demands?”

Our approach focuses on:

  • Identifying movement limitations and weaknesses

  • Building strength and tissue capacity

  • Improving how your body handles load

  • Gradually returning you to the activities you care about

This isn’t always the fastest route to short-term relief, but it is the most reliable path to long-term success.

Why This Matters for Active People

If you’re someone who wants to:

  • Keep training

  • Run, lift, or compete

  • Stay active without recurring setbacks

  • Stop bouncing between flare-ups and “fixes”

Then symptom-only care won’t cut it.

You don’t just need pain reduced.

You need your body prepared.

That’s what we build at AMP.
